It’s ridiculous that they’re thinking of ending it September, in this month alone - when we’re getting closer to when they’re meant to truly lessen restrictions- there have been two positive cases within a week of each other in my year group. And while that doesn’t sound like a lot, my year is made up of 160+ students and these past two weeks we’ve been reduced to 50 odd.
So no, it is not safe to get rid of required self isolation in schools, the last time I had to self-isolate because someone I sat near tested positive six other people tested positive that had been told to isolate. If they hadn’t been forced to self-isolate who knows how many other people would have been infected?
I’m thankful to not have lost anyone, but three of my friends of had it, quite badly actually and I know people that have lost people that are in lower school high school because of Covid. A friend of mine lost an eleven year old cousin because her school didn’t properly enforce self-isolation.
Until Covid is properly supressed and everyone has had the vaccine (that wants/can have it) (and DO NOT get me started on people in schools not getting it, especially when we’re on the front fucking lines as well - and definitely don’t get me started on main body high school being given the okay before sixth form age when we’re at the age where its the norm for us to have jobs and be interacting with our communities on a larger scale) it should remain mandatory.
Just because we, as younger people, tend to have better immune systems doesn’t mean; we don’t have auto-immune disorders, doesn’t mean we aren’t in the at-risk groups, doesn’t mean our FAMILIES aren’t in those groups, it doesn’t mean we can’t FUCKING die from this shit.
I think it’s disgraceful that they’re thinking of ending it in September and I for one cannot agree more with you saying that we’ll just be considered collateral. That this is like we’re all test subjects; because really what else is it?
You’re using teenagers and kids younger as test groups to see if it will screw everyone over again, and then the government will most likely blame us AGAIN if it spikes, just like they did last September when they let a bunch of barely protected children into close quarters when they didn’t have a damn clue how to deal with anything.
The government needs to realise that it’s better to be safe than sorry, to have harsh restrictions until we figure out how to deal with all of this without ‘necessary sacrifices’ that were never and never will be necessary. We all hate isolating, yes, and people struggle with home learning, but guess what? Kids would much rather not have to watch their friends funeral through a damn screen.
